Healing the heart: A journey through loss

Pets are our close confidants. They give us a special kind of love, loyalty and companionship in our lives. They teach us about unconditional love, life and death. They also model for us most beautifully,  being in the moment and the joy and happiness that comes from that.

We often form very close bonds with out pets. When we loose a pet we may all experience and cope with the loss a little differently. Sometimes in our society, people may minimize or not understand our deep feelings of loss over a pet. Therefore it’s important to choose to speak to people who understand or support you in your grief.

The loss of a pet can have a significant impact our lives and those of our family. Loosing a pet can be one of the most difficult times in ones life.

Some of the normal symptoms of loss may be:

Fatigue, sadness, sorrow, guilt, loss of appetite, insomnia, feeling empty, angry

Some questions you may have:

When is it time to say goodbye?

Are my feelings of grief normal?

How can I tell and help my children?

Should I get a new pet and if so, when?
